Every Word document you create on your Mac is fashioned from a template. The purpose of a template is to store styles for documents. In the act of creating a document, you choose a template, and the styles on the template become available to you when you work on your document.
Open the Word document you will use to create a template. Choose File→Save As. The Save As dialog box appears. Enter a name for your template. Open the Format menu and choose Word Template. After you choose Word Template, the Where option in the dialog box changes to My Templates. Word templates are kept in the My Templates folder. Aug 18, 2018 Click Microsoft Word template. This option is in the drop-down menu, and has the '.dotx' extension next to it. You can also select Microsoft Word Macro-Enabled template if you put macros in your document.
To save time formatting your documents, you are invited to create templates with styles that you know and love. You can create a new template from scratch, create a template from a document, or create a template by assembling styles from other templates and documents. Styles in templates, like styles in documents, can be modified, deleted, and renamed.
How do you want to create a new template? You can create a new template from a document or other template, or you can assemble styles from other templates.
To create a document from a template that you created yourself, open the Word Document Gallery (click the New From Template button on the Standard toolbar) and click My Templates. Your self‐made templates appear in the gallery. Select a template and click the Choose button.
Creating a template from a document
If a document has all or most of the styles you want for a template, convert the document into a template so you can use the styles in documents you create in the future. Follow these steps to create a Word template from a Word document:
- Open the Word document you will use to create a template.
- Choose File→Save As.The Save As dialog box appears.
- Enter a name for your template.
- Open the Format menu and choose Word Template.After you choose Word Template, the Where option in the dialog box changes to My Templates. Word templates are kept in the My Templates folder. Next time you create a document, you can go to the My Templates folder in the Word Document Gallery and create a document with your new template.
- Click the Save button.
Probably your new template includes text that it inherited from the document it was created from. Delete the text (unless you want it to appear in documents you create from your new template).
Assembling styles from other documents and templates
Use the Organizer to copy styles from a document to a template or from one template to another. After making a style a part of a template, you can call upon the style in other documents. You can call upon it in each document you create or created with the template. Follow these steps to copy a style between templates and documents:
- Open the document or template with the styles you want to copy.To copy styles from a document, open the document. To copy styles from a template, create a new document using the template with the styles you want to copy.
- Choose Tools→Templates and Add‐Ins.The Templates and Add‐Ins dialog box appears.
- Click the Organizer button.You see the Organizer dialog box. Styles in the document or template that you opened in Step 1 appear in the In list box on the left side.
- Click the Close File button on the right side of the dialog box.The button changes names and becomes the Open File button.
Attaching a different template to a document
It happens in the best of families. You create or are given a document, only to discover that the wrong template is attached to it. For times like those, Word gives you the opportunity to switch templates. Follow these steps:
- Choose Tools→Templates and Add‐Ins.You see the Templates and Add‐Ins dialog box.
- Click the Attach button to open the Choose a File dialog box.
- Find and select the template you want and click the Open button.You return to the Templates and Add‐ins dialog box, where the name of the template you chose appears in the Document Template box.
- Click the Automatically Update Document Styles check box.Doing so tells Word to apply the styles from the new template to your document.
- Click OK.
- Click the Open File button and, in the Open dialog box, find and select the template to which you want to copy styles; then, click the Open button.The names of styles in the template you chose appear on the right side of the Organizer dialog box.
- In the Organizer dialog box, Command+click to select the names of styles on the left side of the dialog box that you want to copy to the template listed on the right side of the dialog box.As you click the names, they become highlighted.
- Click the Copy button.The names of styles that you copied appear on the right side of the Organizer dialog box.
- Click the Close button and click Save when Word asks whether you want to save the new styles in the template.

Use Built-In Business Card Templates

The reason is that you only have to complete one card on the sheet and the rest will automatically populate for you.
To access the business card templates within Word, click File > New. You can then either search for business cards or select the Business or Cards category. Click one to see a preview and its download size and then click Create to open and use it. Here are several terrific options.
Portrait With Waves
If you like business cards in portrait view rather than the ordinary landscape view, this is a nice option. It offers a modern appearance with the waves in the center. This creates an attractive separation between your name, company, and title from your contact information.
Portrait With Logo
Another good portrait option is this next one that has a spot for your logo. Just click the image Replace with Logo and insert your own. Remember, you can resize this area if you need more space for your image. The rest of the card has a professional look and feel, making this an ideal template for most any type of business.
Landscape With Bamboo
If a bamboo theme works for your business, then you will like this Microsoft Word business card template. It’s unique and clean with places for your name, address, phone number, email address, and website. Your name will appear with a pretty shade of green to match the bamboo. But, you can change the color if you want your name to stand out better.
Landscape With World
For technical companies, this neat template has an image of the world on it. But remember, you can replace it if you prefer your own logo. You will notice the website area is highlighted. This denotes a form field which is how the rest of the cards are automatically populated with the details you enter.
Landscape for Retail
If you are in the business of selling, this attractive business card template has small, colorful clothing and accessory images at the top. You can see that there’s a spot for your motto under the company name, which adds a really nice touch to this option.
Landscape With Stripes
Maybe you want a bit of color on your business cards, but without overdoing it. This striped template has both a professional appearance and just the right amount of color. If you put your mouse inside the striped area, you can adjust the width which is cool if you want to highlight a specific color.

Just keep in mind that these templates do not populate all cards automatically like the ones above. Even though you must complete each card on the sheet yourself, you can do this easily with a copy and paste action.
Landscape With Orange
If orange is your color, then this is your template. You can see that the orange works like a border making your company name stand out.

This card template can work for many types of businesses. It has a masculine, two-color appearance and plenty of space for your contact information. You will notice this template, in addition to the others you will see from Vertex42, gives you places for your phone, mobile, and fax numbers.
Landscape Ink Saver
This template is called the Ink Saver because the appearance is basic black, white, and gray with no other color. It’s the only one on this list like it, so if you prefer to keep color out of your business cards, this is the template for you.
Landscape With Maroon
This block-style business card gives you two simple colors. Your contact information is separately nicely from the company name. And you can see there is a good amount of room to include your email address, phone number, physical address, and website.
Landscape With Blue
If you like the block-style template but are not crazy about the colors, take a look at this business card. It has a business-like blue and a basic appearance. Once again, you have plenty of room for all of your contact details.
Blank Business Card Sheets
